well sure, in this digital age, piracy is widespread, but the industry should also remember that because of internet, they are able sell many times as much porn, and to people who vould never dare to enter a store and buy it.

i totally agree, and plus this is how most of the performers became so famous, if porn was not free they would never ever be that famous.
even they use this commercial, they use youtube... Free Media...
They get more famous so when they dance, or create a new movie their fans will pay for them,
that is the way it is now and probably will be in the future...
they can sell their own belongings just because they are famous
look at george michael, now he only produces free music, but when he does concerts he get paid millions... like jenna jameson...
movie companies should and are following this rule, stars need to find another way to make, most of them are doing escorting anyway

However the music industry has a lot of side revenue streams, concerts, sponsor deals, merchandise etc etc.

There is a very small handful of performers in the industry that make a lot of money. Most of them even have to work hard at it or do things they don't want to do get get to that point. Unfortunately, there are gigantic numbers of performers that don't make nearly the money you probably think they make.



What I think was one of porn's biggest mistakes it continuing to push the envelope, getting nastier, getting more stupid, and putting more gimmicks into their product instead of getting better. As the public has slowly gotten more excepting of it the industry should have tried to embrace that instead of catering the most hardcore raincoaters out there. Maybe, just maybe if they would have done so it would have become acceptable enough by this point to be able to generate revenue from advertising. In the new information age it's one of the ways revenue has to be generated. By advertising I mean from non-porn sources. Sure there would still be things that didn't want anything to do with porn because it's porn, but if there was an opening market for a lot of the industries that are more liberal out there maybe the sting of any effect piracy would have had wouldn't be so bad now.

Instead porn just got dumber and tried to turn off as many people as possible to it to cater for the quick but of a shrinking number of the most fanatical people...but what do I know.

I know I'm not going to win a populaity contest with my opinion but... what is really hurting porn is not piracy... but boredom.
Everybody is doing the same shit again and again, and now that the consumer has a lot of chances is not willing to pay for the same stuff over and over.
But is easyer to say piracy (others) are to blame instead of US, doing thousands of scenes that don't have any interest to the public.

Since the tube sites have become popular, I've discovered more porn stars that I would not have learned of before. Because of that, I have purchased more dvds in the past year than I did in the past 5 years combined.
If I ran a studio, I'd have no problem with the leaks and and I'd just find a way to adapt. It's not hard.
Case in point, look at how Radiohead released their last album in 2007. They did fine.

Maybe so, but the quality you get from a well produced DVD is so much better than the tubed stuff. Don't get me wrong, most of what I watch is on the streaming sites, but there is a time and a place for both.
The industry just needs to adapt. Maybe stop growing at such a rapid pace. 30 years ago, there were probably a couple dozen porn stars. Now there are a couple thousand. Why? The internet. In 1970, industry revenues were $10 Million. It's probably $10 Billion now
